Poverty

What is poverty?

Poverty is not just a lack of income but also a person who has a lack of resources, capabilities, options, power, and protection. Those whose income is less than what they need to provide basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and other essential items. Poverty can mean various things to many people and can be defined differently by anyone.

The six types of poverty are situational, generational, absolute, relative, urban and rural poverty. Situational poverty is caused by an unexpected trauma or loss and is usually temporary like environmental disasters, divorce or health problems. Generational poverty happens in families where two generations are born into poverty and aren't equipped to get out of the situation. Absolute poverty is rare but is when a person has a deficiency of everyday necessities and their focal point is just surviving the day. Relative poverty refers to the economic status of a person or family. Their income is lower than the average standard of living. Urban poverty occurs in metropolitan areas and these people deal with disturbances such as crowding, violence, and noise. Lastly, rural poverty occurs in rural areas where there are more single-guardian households. Families have less access to services, support for the disabled, and quality education opportunities.

How does it affect people?

Poverty affects people substantially and makes a great impact on their lives. Some people may never know what is like to live without such a struggle. Though possible, once someone is in poverty, it extremely hard to get out. Those who live in poverty usually have poor health and violence rates are higher.

Children and youth are profoundly affected when living in poverty. Whether they are born into it or something happened that had a great impact on their lives. It has numerous effects on their mental and physical health. Poverty is linked with conditions that aren't ideal such as homelessness, insufficient nutrition, food deficiency, inadequate childcare or lack of access to health care. Those negative conditions could have negative outcomes. They may have a poor academic achievement, older kids like teens may drop out, some may be abused and neglected. They may also have behavioral, social, emotional, physical health or developmental problems.

Kids in their early childhood have limitations and may affect their ability to learn. This stage is very important in the developing process and if these kids don't have the proper education or aren't being adequately raised it will come back to them in the long run.
