What are the effects of unemployment?
Being unemployed impacts an individuals income, health, and morality. The major disadvantage of being unemployed is not making enough money or not making money at all. All material things cost money and without any source of income an individual wouldn't be able to buy anything and they'd just have to deal with it. Studies show that unemployed workers died more than a year earlier than average. The longer a person is unemployed the more severe their health consequences become. Furthermore, being unemployed may lead to depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, mental health problems, and could cause them to lose friends and all self-respect. Many just go downhill from being unemployed, though there are those out there who are trying to get a job. Some become stressed because finding employment is that difficult.
The economy is also affected by those who are unemployed. Unemployment usually leads to poverty and the weight of debt increases which leads to economic problems. The state and federal government help and pay unemployment benefits which take away from spending money in other areas. When the unemployment rates increase, crime rates tend to also. Many crimes are committed by those who are unemployed and living in poverty. Those who are unemployed because of "socially unacceptable reasons" are more inclined to take part in burglary, robbery or an act of violence. They usually don't desire a job or seek a better life.
What does it mean to be unemployed?
Those who are unemployed don't have jobs which means they can't make money to provide for themselves or their family if they have one. People may say things like, "They should just get a job", "It's their fault", or something like "They deserve it". In some cases that may be true but in many, it isn't. In certain places, it may be extremely difficult to get a job. You also need to consider the other factors like discrimination and inequality.
